Kite Safety

home : general tips

There is no need to overplay the safety aspect of kites, but some sensible things are always needed:

Don't!
  • Never ever fly in (or near) a storm - lightning kills and people have died by messing with storms.
  • Never fly near an airport - there are laws about this!
  • Never fly if you feel uncomfortable with the wind - don't go beyond your, or your kite's limits
  • Never fly near power lines.
  • Keep hold of a kite if in trouble - the kite can be replaced, you can't!
  • Ignore local bylaw, bans, etc. - always respect the law - it will be better in the long run for all kite activities.

Do!

  • Carry a mobile phone - if you fly in remote places, or fly big powerful kites by yourself this could be a good idea (even if it's a case of your car breaking down).
  • Let people know where you are flying - "just in case" something happens.
  • Use appropriate safety gear - such as a helmet & kite keepers for traction activities, good footwear, etc.
  • Watch for other people & animals - being hit by a kite is not a nice thing. Also the lines of a powerful kite in a strong wind will cut.
  • Respect other site users - be polite and ask anybody else flying if you are OK to set up.
  • Land the kite - wait and let people/animals pass.
  • Obey the Country Side Code - respect the environment see the new country code for more info.

And finally:

  • Do Have fun - just use your common sense & treat others in the manner you would like to be treated.
