Revolution 1.5 SUL

home : quad line
Revolution 1.5 SUL
This is the lightweight version of the Revolution line (the SUL stands for Super Ultra Lightweight). It's designed for 0 to about 5 mph winds - which does mean you can fly it inside if a) you want to and b) you have room big enough to do so (which I don't). The size is the same as the EXP, but the weight of the kite is less than the others. The spars and sails are lighter, and the bridle is of lighter line. I picked this one up second hand in January 2002 & have spent quite a bit of time getting to know it since then.

Assuming you are flying it outside in a light breeze it handles like every other Revolution - all the usual tricks - slides, dive stop, spins, tip stands, etc. can be done with ease - it's just you can do these when the standard Rev's won't take off.

Purchased: February 2002

Good Things

All the good points of the Revolution EXP plus

  • Being able to fly in no wind (but this is a very different way of flying - much more difficult to normal flying)
  • In a light wind it feels much more responsive that the EXP - but that maybe that the EXP's sail has had a lot of use and is feeling a bit baggy, whereas this one is nice and tight. Still feels better....
  • The longer handles are actually nicer to use - more responsive (not really the reason for the above point - I have swapped the handles around & the SUL still fells better in flight).

Bad Things

  • The Revolution SUL does not like gusty wind - I broke one of the vertical spars by taking it out in gusty wind - not enough wind for the EXP, and turned out too much for the SUL. A trip down to my local kite shop.......
  • More expensive that the EXP - more or less the same price as the 1.5 SLE.
  • Broken spars cost more to replace than the EXP.
  • Zero wind flying is hard - worth it, but hard. Unless you only want to do zero/light wind flying you won't want only this kite.
  • And if you do want to do zero wind flying (and especially indoor flying) might be better to go for the dedicated Revolution Indoor
  • The vent fabric is prone to damage (as was the Revolution EXP).

Final Thoughts

Again it's an excellent kite - fast responsive, etc. But for me the ability to fly in no wind is great! It seems that here in Sheffield in the summer on the groups usual flying night (Thursday's) there is almost always no wind. At least I can do some flying, rather than look at kites in their bags, then wander over to the pub for a drink.......
